Sean Gallagher

Pilates Teacher

Sean Gallagher is owner and founder of The New York Pilates Studio®. Using his extensive Pilates archives, he developed the first professional Pilates teacher training certification, considered the gold standard that all others are based on. He was also instrumental in integrating Pilates into physical therapy since 1990.

Sean was a modern dancer for 10 years and received his BFA in Dance and BS in Physical Therapy from Temple University. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Alumni Fellow Award from Temple University’s School of Allied Health for his many accomplishments in the field of Dance Medicine and Physical Therapy. He earned a Master’s in Clinical Nutrition at Bridgeport University, and trained in Macrobiotic counseling at the Kushi Institute. Sean also completed work towards his doctorate in physical therapy as well over three years of courses at The Canadian College of Osteopathy.

A licensed physical therapist in 6 states, Sean has been a leading practitioner in dance physical therapy for over 25 years. As founder and director of Performing Arts Physical Therapy, Sean and his staff provide Physical Therapy care at over 110 Broadway shows including Cyrano De Bergerac, Rock of Ages, Mamma Mia, Chaplin, Matilda, Kinky Boots, and A Christmas Story. He has also provided his vocal wellness to Batina Miller of Sister Act, Tony winner Nina Arianda of Venus in Fur, and Doug Hodges in LaCage. Hi is an adjunct professor for anatomy and Pilates at the New School University. At Marymount Manhattan, he teaches Somatics for the dance science program, and has been the gross anatomy professor at New York University’s Doctoral Physical Therapy program. He started and developed the physical therapy programs at The Juilliard School, State University of New York at Purchase, The Miller Institute for Performing Artists, The Pennsylvania Ballet and he was the first Physical Therapist to work with modern dance companies like Paul Taylor, David Parsons, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.

Mr. Gallagher is a Feldenkrais practitioner and has studied yoga with B.K.S. Iyengar in India, acupuncture in Korea, Vietnam, and the United States, and massage in Thailand and the Philippines. He is also a New York State certified Emergency Medical Technician, (EMT) and volunteers in his local ambulance service.
