In today’s Pilatesology Member Spotlight, learn how Molly transformed her home workout practice!

About 10 years ago I did mat Pilates several times a week at a neighbourhood studio and loved it but then I fell out of the habit. I had a baby right before Covid and spent a couple years feeling out of shape and stuck. I thought Pilates would help bring some of myself back. Pilatesology felt ideal. The value for money is amazing and I wouldn’t have to of anywhere. We, like many, made a Covid move to have more space and  so we had the space for my own little Pilates corner.

Alisa has been a wonderful virtual mentor throughout my whole return to Pilates over the last year. The Intro to Reformer Series is great! It really gave me the confidence to use a Reformer for the first time ever without worrying I’d hurt myself. Alisa is so patient and thoughtful that I didn’t ever feel like I shouldn’t be doing a particular exercise or that I wasn’t ready in my own practice.

Through Pilates I’ve improved my balance, upper body strength, and absolutely mental health. I’ve been through some stress, family stuff, work stuff, the same as everyone else, and regular Pilates is a key part of my treatment plan. Pilates has also totally changed my mindset. I’ve never been a huge exercise fan but now if I’m traveling I take my mat and some exercise clothes with me so I can get some Pilates in almost every day.

I was absolutely thrilled to transition from mat workouts to the reformer. Alisa and my other favourite teachers had helped me build my strength and my confidence and I was excited to take my practice to the next level. I wondered if I should try a reformer class at a studio before trying on my own but I snagged a deal on FB marketplace and I was off to the races. I don’t have a stand or a box yet (hoping Santa comes through for me) so I’m enjoying learning and I’m pumped to evolve my practice further with more equipment. Molly’s reformer flow class is on heavy rotation around here.

My advice to someone starting their Pilates practice would be to stick with it. I was so frustrated when I got back into Pilates and I couldn’t do a proper rollup and my stamina was not great. But Joseph Pilates’ adage about having a new body after 30 sessions is absolutely true.

You’ll make progress you can feel  if you’re consistent, even as a total beginner. I sometimes feel a bit silly doing classes alongside the models who are super young and super fit but it also is a huge confidence boost to know that my body does not look like that but it can do all those same exercises.

I also dove head first into the history of Pilates. I wanted to know the names that teachers mentioned in their classes so I read The Pilates Effect by Stacey Redfield and Sara Holmes and learned a lot.
