As Jay often reminds his students, Pilates is a strong center and a 2 way stretch out of it. In this session, he shows how the Long Stretch Series on the Reformer (including: Long Stretch, Down Stretch, Up Stretch, Elephant, Elephant w/1 Leg plus a variation, and Long Back Stretch) is all about radiating the strength of your center out through your lower body instead of muscling through the movements with the arms. His student Melanie gets specific cues for her body as well as a couple of variations to help her connect that can help everyone understand this series better. Find out more about working with Jay Grimes at www.VintagePilates.com where this class was filmed.

That was great thank you for the detail. Should one eventually not bend the elbows in Long Back stretch?

Jay Grimes! Does it get any more awesome than this?!?! These are exactly the types of videos I come to this site for… Learn learn learn. The workshops and
Pieces of brilliance imparted from such gifted teachers as you. I feel privileged to have taken the few live workshops that I have from you. This reminder of your practicing what you preach with minimal cueing, just enough hands on… Voila! Great job to both you and your student.

Thank you indeed Mr Grimes for going through the fine detail in each of these exercises on the Reformer.
Kathi Ross Nash recently shared some of these recently in her class “Kathi’s Reformer on the Mat” and so now, I am able to practice them on the mat, and of course with the convenience of a shiny wooden floor!
Having had lower back problems for 20 years, I find great value in practicing these movements correctly, as you have now so clearly outlined, and feel the muscles of spine really working and strengthening as I practice.
It is particularly interesting and informative to hear its not about the ROM, but, what you feel as you work “correctly”.
A privilege again to learn from this gentleman.
