Kathi Ross Nash takes you through a complete intermediate mat and details the goals of each exercise along the way. For instance, you’ll learn what the Single Leg Circles are for and what is happening in the body so that the goal—in this case, core stability—can be the focus. As Kathi puts it, if you first learn the intent of the exercise, you can better understand how to break it down for the needs of your body. The student that Kathi works with here is her 17-year-old daughter Zoe Nash, whose flexible dancer’s body makes this session about working from her center instead of allowing her flexibility to take over. Loved this class—beautiful daughter but would have been more helpful with a student less flexible—more realistic. Explanations were great though and all cues.

Too much explaining!!! I like cues while we’re doing the work out but not separate when I have to wait and wait for the person to be quiet. Ugh

Oh how I wish my daughter loved pilates, so I could have sweet moments like these doing what I love…but if mommy did it, she didn’t want it. The two of you are gorgeous, and I learned from the great cues and hands on Kathi…Zoe is just beautiful, and she doesn’t talk back I’d you do that , lol

From a teaching perspective, this is such a GREAT learning tool to use again & again Kathi – thank you so much! I know I will be re-watching this one several more times. I love all of your thorough explanations of the intermediate mat exercises and “breaking it down” too – just awesome!

ROLL UP: When lying supine, why is it important to “disengage” the shoulders when reaching the arms over the head long behind you?
I was so pleased hearing you say that the MAT is the “meat and potatoes” of the Method, and by executing it very well, you have learned Pilates.
    Wonderful stuff.Thank you very much.

About the shoulders- when you move your arms – you move from the back- try it both ways- feel what happens with ROM and in joint. also- in pilates we reach out of the joint to give more space- encouraging more circulation. The disengagement also allows the ribs not to flare and helps to keep the spine long.

Thank you both! I was such fun to torture- I mean teach my 17 year old daughter. And now- thanks to Pilatesology I will have this for ever! I adore how Pilates can be molded- but no changed- to fit each student. this SAME lesson on my football player son would look so different. he NEEDS flexibility! Always looking for the balance between stretch strength and control… 🙂 Gosh I love this work!
