Bob Liekens shares the story of his own Pilates journey and how he became a teacher working for Romana. After learning to teach through independent study, Bob worked with Romana directly in the creation of her first teacher training manual and he recounts what that was like. Despite the necessity for training manuals Bob believes that learning to teach  is an organic process of discovery more than learning a list of exercises. The interview wraps up with a brief discussion of Bob's memories of studying the archival materials with Romana.

What Others Are Saying

What is the manual they’re talking about? 🙂
Is it still produced somewhere? It’d be a brilliant gem for everyone to own a copy!

    • Alisa Wyatt

Hi Cokinagram, That manual was used for the training program that Romana ran for The Pilates Studio owned by Sean Gallagher. It is not produced anymore as far as I know.

I attended a mat workshop at Pi Studios in London many years ago with Bob Liekens Teaching. I first learned Classical Pilates Mat following the DVD series produced by Peter Fiasca back in 2006, and Bob Lieken was the narrator. I am very grateful to have had that experience. His knowledge immediately impressed me and I was very sad to learn of his passing.
Perhaps, Pilatesology can get hold of some of his teachings and share them here!

Gosh – It’s four years since we saw Mr Bob Lieken!
How about getting him on board with a rigorous Super Advanced Mat practice.
Now, that would be fun to follow on my mat at home.

These interviews are so informative! Please keep them coming! It’s fascinating to hear stories about first-generation teachers and the knowledge they passed along, even more so since so much of the work has been altered or watered down by some members of the subsequent generations.

How very interesting indeed. I will be listening to this interview many times. Also looking forward to the forthcoming Intermediate mat class.
Personally speaking, I would never have learned about many of the things Mr Lieken spoke about, if it were not for PILATESOLOGY. Outstanding contribution to ones education of the Classical history. Thank you very much.
