Learn the way Michael Johnson was taught the Pulling Straps by Romana as well as several other exercises he uses for thoracic strength and shoulder mobility. Instead of using the back muscles to elevate the body, he emphasizes keeping the chest down and creating the chest opening by moving the scapulae onto the back. You’ll discover a whole new world of postural power! Check out Michael’s Instagram page, where you can contact him to teach workshops or private lessons in NYC. Our thanks to The Art of Control™ in Stamford, CT where this was filmed.

Ditto what catedavis said! This made so much sense to me and filled in a lot of blanks regarding both of the long box series’. Thank you so much, Michael and Pilatesology!!

Michael, love it. I really enjoy your anatomical breakdowns. It’s a good reminder of the true goal of each exercise. Staying out of the lower back (which naturally moves you in extension) makes it much harder! All of my clients (especially the women) do need more upper back, shoulder and arm strength. Thanks!

I’ve been taught Pulling Straps differently with upper thoracic extension. It’s a real distraction from what’s going on at the shoulders! I really like your ideas & explanation of why you do it this way. Some great tips! I shall go away & play with this & see how it feels in my body. Thank you.
