Kara takes you through the Leg Stretches, or as Romana called them, the Ballet Stretches, on the Ladder Barrel which are great for increasing flexibility in the hips and hamstrings as well as relieving sciatica and more. Kara teaches Romana’s version of these stretches which includes a slight variation as the leg reaches behind the body. If you don’t have a Barrel at home, it is possible to practice the basics of this series using a stable counter or railing. This class was filmed at Kara Wily Pilates in Los Angeles.

Thankyou for those tips Kara. Great tip about relaxing rather than “trying”. Good tip for many applications! Thankyou.

Traditionally no box or any other tool was used. If the stretches are just too intense, start elsewhere. If it is a matter of you can do a little–do a little more. Your stretch will increase and you will eventually be able to go in larger ranges of motion. One more aside, I usually tell people to stop “trying” to stretch and to try to relax. That desire to stretch can sometimes put a tension on the body that limits you from experiencing any lasting effects.

By the way could I ask if you are short or have less flexible hips is it usual to stand up on a box or something? There could be a problem with the ladder being effectively shortened . . .

Great range of stretch angles and I loved how so much of the body is simultaneously being stretched or is switched on in some way connecting and integrating many parts of the body. Great to see some Ladder Barrel exercises which I’ve found hard to find on internet. Would love to see many more. Thankyou Kara.

Cool I will make a note of it. The Ladder Barrel is a really great tool. We will get more up!

So excited you think so. I often think Ladder Barrel looks like a hidden secret weapon for many different exercises. Particularly ones that sweep throughout the whole body like in your video. Yes would love more demonstrations on the lesser used but powerful apparatuses which each have their own unique strengths and add variation and sometimes more precision to the more common repertoire exercises. Thankyou Kara!
