If you're a teacher dealing with clients who have hip and knee issues, this brilliant workshop will fill your toolbox. In it Clare and her student Joe Giordano demonstrate a complete repertoire of exercises aimed at knee and hip rehab. When Joe first came to Clare he was in need of hip replacement surgery and was having extreme difficulty walking. Pilates has helped him to recover his ability to walk and has prepared for his upcoming surgery. Clare shares her strategy behind how she approaches knee and hip issues like Joe's, why the Reformer might not be a good choice when dealing with injured lower extremities, and a complete plan for rebuilding strength and balance without risking further injury. The handout that Clare mentions in this video is available here: Rehab of hip and knee using Pilates 2007. Visit Clare at Progressive Bodyworks and explore her new program for studio owners: Pilates Avatar. *PMA CECs available for this class. Click HERE to go to CEC page.

Wow, Clare…… this was great! I have so many clients that can benefit from this and my own husband will be having his knee replaced next year, so I’m looking to help him and this is a great resource. I’ve always appreciated your knowledge and straight forward cueing. (I still have my Peak DVD’s from my comprehensive training that you did and I love them!)

brilliant! would this routine be ok even after hip and knee replacement?Let me know your thoughts

Hi Marta, I’m answering for Clare because I don’t think she saw this comment. I would say yes this would be ok after hip and knee replacement with considerations for the client’s current level of conditioning and having a release from his/her doctor first. If in doubt, call the doctor or Physical Therapists office and ask them what the client needs to avoid.

Love this routine! I have a client double hip replacement, twice. First ports were recalled. Second time round used a cadaver bone in the thigh and it shattered. It’s wrapped with wire for different places. Not sure why? I will find out. One side bone at least 4 inches longer than the other. Last three vertebrae’s look like Z. Lots I can do traction and out the lower back and abs to give him relief. Looking for a routine to work more of the hips, leg. He doesn’t like to wear his lift other than when he’s working. His lift, is a sandal with wedge. I believe the reformer we are using is the taller version from balanced body. The springboard are use is against the wall. Means we have to get down to the mat on the floor. Thank you Claire Dunphy. I Will be searching and finding the best remedy for my client. Any feedback any ideas are welcome.
