When learning Pilates, it’s common to have a lot of tension in the shoulders and students often struggle when learning to keep the shoulders down and chest open. In this session, Junghee presents techniques for understanding how to find the proper placement of the shoulders and arms. Working with Gwen, who has very loose shoulder joints that need to be strengthened and connected to her center, Junghee uses several different apparatus to teach this skill: the Cadillac, Baby Arm Chair and Reformer. Beginning with a basic position of lying down on a mat, Junghee progresses Gwen through exercises and apparatus that change her body position and help to build body awareness in how to properly use her shoulders. Filmed at Can Do Fitness, Edgewater, NJ.

Thank you Junghee for this informative lesson! I applied this to my more beginner client and had great success with shoulder placement. I then continued this same lesson with my more advanced clients and we were able to progress beautifully into other exercises where shoulder placement can become a real havoc…thinking teaser long box – circles and salute, arm series on the reformer right up into the Star! Thanks so much! I love using pilatesology and the amazing teachers to help me become a more proficient teacher and of course student of the Pilates work!

Hi joesmat, thank you for watching this film.
I could see some people struggle with pumping arms action I have watched. Holding arm pit tight towards to center line and engaging shoulder blades toward back help the pumping action and placement that I have realized. This makes lateral rotation of upper arms, humerus. I’m glad to hear you like this. Thank you!

The Shoulder Placement and positioning demonstrated for the 100 was very interesting. I really like how you positioned the arms in the set-up,and how you adjusted with your hands on the side body, and again, how you adjusted the shoulders when doing the 100.Thank you for sharing this skill.

This was so great. Very helpful to see how much the elbow placement affects the shoulders. Another epiphany for me via Pilatesology. Thank you so much, Junghee
