In this workshop, Jay shares what he learned working directly with Joe Pilates, on the subject of how the back of the body should connect through the work. Pilates is all about correct alignment and if you create a strong center with a 2 way stretch out of it, most every problem will fix itself. Jay’s first rule is to “trust the work”—Joe built everything you need as a teacher into the exercises. If you understand how to choose the right exercises, they will do the work realigning your client’s body for you. After a brief discussion, Jay takes students through exercises on several different apparatus to help them discover how their arms connect to their lower back. If you struggle as a teacher trying to get your students to pull their shoulders down, lengthen their necks and lift up tall, these exercises combined with the idea of connecting to your back will help you stop overcorrecting and start seeing results. Filmed at the Feb 2013 Arizona Classical Pilates Conference. For info on future conferences like this one, visit The Pilates Core.

I wanted to attend this conference so bad, wonderful to see this on the site for those of us who couldn’t make it! I cannot wait to see Jay this summer in Big Bear… I agree with the comment above, after 15 years of Pilates, I feel like I have so much to learn and my body still is being “sculpted” every time I practice. This site has strengthened me quickly while I was trained classically and knew to trust the work I think I thought that was too easy needed more words…the body knows more than our head sometimes and this is a great example of that! Thanks for sharing!

Jay, that was fabulous! You know after being a midwife for 21years i discovered Pilates in 1997. All these years as a midwife the whole process from conception to birth never ceased to amaze me! The same happened with pilates.!!………It never ceases to amaze me….. the continual learning, just moving and letting your body discover and feel, the process and the changes as you progress and the deeper understanding as you move and let pilates change your body is sooooo amazing to me! The more I learn the more I understand and the more I understand the more I want to learn………. it is never ending! Like childbirth… it really is the genius of the body….. AMAZING! Thank You!
