If you have a client who has been diagnosed with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia, this Mat workshop is for you! You’ll be learning from Sonje Mayo whose experience as a Pilates teacher began in the 1960s when she met and trained with Joseph Pilates himself. A physical therapist for decades, Sonje’s reasoning is backed by science, you can rest assured that what you learn in this session will be safe for your clients. You’ll come away with a complete mat repertoire that you can use for the most basic elderly client along with options to challenge advanced students with this silent disease. We recommend watching Sonje’s full workshop on Osteoporosis before watching this in order to understand the why of what you’ll be teaching. Thank you very much for your expertises. Explanations, and progressions of mat exercises are excellent. Very helpful and encouraging.
I have a 55 y/o very fit female client, who has excessively extended lumbar spine known to be equivalent of 75 year old spine. She also presents with excessive thoracic kyphosis, which has not been tested for osteoporosis, but I am treating her with suspicion that she is osteoporotic in the region as well. Your video has confirmed my lines of thoughts and reasonings, and also has given me alternative approaches and more repertories I can explore.
All the videos by you have been very enjoyable to watch and very educational. Thank you again.

By an “excessively extended lumbar spine”, I assume you mean an exaggerated lumbar lordosis? That would follow with an excessive thoracic kyphosis, due to spinal compensation.
Even if she does not have osteoporosis, you will be correct and safer in following the protocol for Pilates modificatios for osteoporosis due to her exaggerated spinal curvature.
However I would encourage her to get a Bone Mineral Density test. I always find that people are more committed to their exercise and lifestyle modifications if they know they are osteoporotic.
Also, if she does have osteoporosis, the doctor will give her the necessary meds to slow down progression.
I am pleased to hear that you are taking this lady seriously and doing what you can for her. Well done!
