Do you need a professional mat to do Pilates? No! Every workout on Pilatesology can be done with a simple floor mat. See what kind Alisa recommends and where to put your hands and feet if a video cues to use handles or a strap. Find the mats we like in our Store and at Gratz Pilates. Filmed at Pilatesology Studio.

Hello, how to start for back pain, is it ok to start with the pre-pilates? Thank you!

      Hi mxatzop,
Is it general pain or do you have a diagnosis from a doctor? The reason I ask is that if you have a condition like osteoporosis, disk injury or other issues you may need to avoid certain movements. The classes on our Spine Safe Workouts list keep the spine long so are considered safe for most back issues. Our Pre-Pilates series does the same except for some lifting of the head so if you don’t have anything going on in your neck, it’s also a great place to start.

Thank you for this! You say we need a mat that”s thick enough to protect our spine. Can you tell us about how thick that is? I have a 6 mm yoga mat. Thanks!

Hi Kelly14, Good question – I have a 6mm yoga mat and it’s perfect for my husband to roll on but if I put it on a hard floor it’s just barely enough for me–it’s different for each body depending on how much your bones stick out of your spine. So try rolling on it carefully and if it hurts at all, it’s too thin. If your spine doesn’t feel like it’s going to get bruised then you’re all set!
