Kara uses a Long Pole for this mat workout (a broomstick can substitute) as a tool to provide extra stretch and feedback to your body. It will bring your awareness to areas you didn’t realize were tight or weak, plus it adds a fun challenge to many exercises. Enjoy! Visit Kara at: Kara Wily Pilates.

Kara! What a way to intensify the mat exercises. I totally agree with joesmat , too. You are a superstar! During this routine I felt a deeper connection in my center. The challenge of using the pole to work deeper where the work REALLY Comes from had me focused and present in my body. ????Thank you Kara for another awesome video to challenge my practice. ????

Ynowak–Great. I hope to add an advanced version too, but I am sure you can play around and figure out some variations. I think it is a great way to mix things up while keeping things real 🙂

This is such well thought out and innovative use of a simple POLE and how much I could feel the stretches as I followed along on my mat.
It goes without saying, but out of respect, for the effort this Lady exhibited in this video, and quality of her movement techniques; she is an “outstanding” practitioner and Teacher.
I so liked the demonstration of coming from Control Balance to one Leg Squat and UP to standing with such elegance. ***** Star Stuff Kara Wiley!
I thank you Kara Wiley for sharing the Martha Graham story. So very interesting and revealing indeed.

joesmat (Colin, right?) I am blushing, thanks so much. I know how much you study the mat work. I have been doing a fair amount myself lately and really enjoying it. The pole helps me to have some objective appreciation of what I am doing, so I have really liked using it and oh yes, helping me feel where I need it most. ( I think I goofed a little on the coming up on one side), but yes Romana would give us great variations at the end of class when you could put all of your work into practice. ) And yes, it all helped me very much in studying Graham technique. All good stuff, I hope to come back and do a more advanced version, but you can play with some good stuff at home too. Thanks again!
